Ice breaking operations, including blasting, are set to begin Sunday, March 2, on the Rideau River, weather and ice conditions permitting. In preparation of ice breaking activities, City staff will be cutting keys to remove large pieces of ice along the Rideau River commencing February 11, weather permitting.

Parents and teachers in the vicinity of the river are reminded that children should be supervised at all times around water and are asked to warn children of the dangers of open water and to keep them away from the river especially during ice breaking and blasting operations.

The City, in partnership with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, undertakes this process each year to alleviate possible spring flooding in flood-prone areas. Ice breaking operations will be carried out daily. Residents are asked to remain a reasonable distance from the river until operations are completed. For more information, please call 3-1-1.
